Volume One, Issue One, Rare and valuable collectible!
This self-described "magazine of sexual candor," was far ahead of its time, and by today's standards is quite acceptable.
Very tasteful, artist, aesthetic, informative and scholarly.
Beautifully illustrated throughout.
Edited and published by Ralph Ginsburg, who, in xxxx, began publication of Eros, his first major work. It was a quarterly hardbound periodical containing articles and photo-essays on love and sex. Herb Lubalin was the art director and second on the masthead. Only four issues of Eros were published, largely because Ginzburg was indicted under federal obscenity laws for the fourth issue. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which upheld Ginzburg's conviction, although under subsequent legal precedent, his conviction would have been overturned.
This issue includes short stories by Ray Bradbury and Guy de Maupassant, an extract from Eric Partridge's "vulgar dictionary", and poems by John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester.
All of this rendered Eros a rare collectible.
Bound in cardboard in a 13" x 10" format, 80 pages.
Very good condition, has been in my family for almost a half century.
